Scope of Work:

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Goals

Homeowner Bruce came to Ascend with two related frustrations: mulch that wouldn’t stay in his landscape beds and a backyard that lacked a functional outdoor space for grilling and everyday use. He wanted a small patio near the deck and a walkway to tie the space together.

What appeared on the surface to be a cosmetic refresh revealed a more significant underlying issue. Drainage problems were the root cause of the mulch loss, and Ascend’s approach was to correct that first before making any improvements. The plan addressed drainage, bed containment, hardscape installation, and a final landscape refresh — in the right order, for lasting results.

Service Timeline

Project Phases

Phase 1  · ✓ Completed

Site Assessment & Planning

Full site evaluation to identify drainage issues contributing to ongoing mulch displacement in landscape beds. Drainage correction plan developed alongside hardscape design for the flagstone patio and connecting walkway. Scope and sequencing confirmed with homeowner before work began.

Phase 2  · ✓ Completed

Drainage Correction

Extensive drainage work completed across the affected areas to resolve the underlying water management issues. Grade and flow corrections made to ensure proper water movement away from landscape beds. Site stabilized and prepared for hardscape and landscape installation.

Phase 3  · ✓ Completed

Hardscape Installation

Flagstone patio base prepared and stone installed adjacent to the deck to create a dedicated grilling area. Flagstone walkway constructed to connect the deck to the backyard. Cobblestone edging installed along all landscape beds to properly contain mulch and define clean borders.

Phase 4  ·  ✓ Completed

Final Results & Landscape Refresh

Fresh mulch installed throughout all landscape beds following edging and drainage completion. Final grading and site cleanup completed. With the root drainage issue resolved and the space properly finished, the project came together as intended — and the homeowner was extremely happy with the result.
